All-Freshman Team Selections
24 of the top performers and prospects from the Class of 2027 in Michigan high school hockey
Craig Peterson
March 12, 2024
One of the more unique aspects of high school hockey is when 14-year-olds are on the same ice, competing against 18-year-olds. And my favorite thing to see is when some of those freshmen not only compete at this level, but thrive and make plays against players two, three, sometimes four years their senior. The 2023-24 season provided a ton of impact freshmen on a range of programs across the state. Sure, teams like Alpena and Divine Child and Hancock had its fair share of young guns. But also, blue blood programs like Detroit Catholic Central and Brighton had impact freshmen who played in all three phases of the game.
My criteria for the All-Freshman Team:
- Overall skill, ability and potential
- Impact and role they played to their respective team
- Performance and production
There were some special freshmen this season, maybe more in '23-24 than in recent memory. Here's some of my top players from the Class of 2027:

Brighton Forward Tim Peterson
Started the season, Game 1 for No. 2-ranked Brighton alongside two of the top players in the entire state. Tim Peterson was the recipient of a Baptism by fire, so to speak, and handled it admirably. He finished the season with nine goals and 14 points, playing the sixth hardest schedule in the state.
Hancock Forward Tevin Stukel
Arguably Hancock’s top forward this season, Tevin Stukel is an absolute pest to play against. His work-hard approach frustrates opposing defenseman and forces a lot of turnovers. Not the prettiest skater, but extremely effective on every shift.
Marquette Forward Seth Sandstrom
My top-rated 2008-born freshman in the state. His footwork is incredible, and his hands and play-making ability are impressive. Seth Sandstrom is one of the most naturally gifted players in the Class of 2027, and an instant impact player for Marquette this season.
Grosse Ile Forward Adalar Hovis
The state’s highest scorer from the Class of 2027. Adalar Hovis put up 20 goals and 52 points; 18 more than the next highest freshman skater. He put together a 13-game point streak and scored multiple points in 14 of 25 games this season.
Forest Hills Northern-Eastern Forward Nolan Geno
Was going every other shift for Forest Hills Northern-Eastern down the back half of the schedule. Nolan Geno has good size for the age group, skates well, has solid puck skills and is very disciplined. He executed the Bird Dogs’ 2-3 forecheck brilliantly.
Hancock Forward Brady Axford
A little undersized, even for the age group. But Axford is very comfortable with the puck, and capable of finding the back of the net. He was one of three Hancock forwards to score double-digit goals this season and finished with 16 points.
Forest Hills Central Forward Mike Timmer
A talented and complete skill set. Mike Timmer has really good footwork, smooth hands and a pretty solid understanding of the game. Don’t judge a book by its cover; he’s a much more promising prospect than his two goals and five points would suggest on the surface.
Alpena Forward Brody Misiak
A real good effort guy who works hard on the forecheck, but also has the ability to read and react to the play as an F3 high in the zone. Brody Misiak finished fourth on the team in scoring, with 10 goals and 17 points, playing an integral role on a young team that won 15 games.
Sault Ste. Marie Forward Grady Hartman
Decent footwork to go along with his good size. Grady Hartman has a solid foundation to his game and could really take off if all goes well. He supports the play well, keeps his feet moving constantly and scored eight points in 22 games for Sault Ste. Marie this season.
Fenton-Linden Forward Trenton Rockman
Led his team in scoring, with 13 goals and 20 points as a freshman. Trenton Rockman was able to produce by finding soft areas of the ice and going to spots where the puck is going to go. He’s got pretty good hands too, and can operate in tight quarters.
Canton Forward Will Schley
Half of his team-leading 28 points came in the final month of the season. It took Will Schley some time for his game to click at the varsity level, but once it did, he was tough to stop for Canton. Nine multi-point games as a freshman.
Riverview Gabriel Richard Forward Michael Taucher
A major contributor for the 19th-ranked team in the state. Michael Taucher was second on the team in goals (15) and third in points (26) for the 15-win Riverview Gabriel Richard Pioneers. Two game-winning goals and a contributor in all three phases of the game.
Divine Child Forward Brody McNamara
A playmaker with a unique opportunity to play alongside his goal-scoring brother. Twenty of Brody McNamara’s 22 points this season were assists. Not only did he contribute 5-on-5, but nine of McNamara’s assists came on the man advantage as well.
Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard Forward Chandler Stancil
Eighth among freshmen in scoring this season. Chandler Stancil finished with 13 goals and 22 points, appearing in all 25 games for Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard. He scored five points in his first two career varsity games, and added his first career hat trick in January against Divine Child.

Detroit Catholic Central Defenseman Sam Masek
The first freshman in at least 10 seasons to play the entire regular-season for Detroit Catholic Central. Sam Masek was a regular-shift guy on the blue line, scoring his first career goal against No. 4 Brighton. Finished with eight points in his first varsity season.
Novi Defenseman Jacob Vellucci
Joined Novi just after Thanksgiving, and immediately bolstered the Wildcats’ back end. Jacob Vellucci is a really strong skater with a 6-foot frame, and comfortable with the puck, scoring eight points as a freshman. He finished the regular season on a five-game point streak.
Grand Rapids Christian Defenseman Sam DeYoung
He’s got a big frame and a lot of potential. Sam DeYoung played big minutes for 22nd-ranked Grand Rapids Christian. A top-four D-man who saw a lot of puck touches, opportunities and situations to make plays.
Alpena Defenseman Ethan Walker
A solid puck mover who quarterbacked Alpena’s top power-play unit. Ethan Walker is a bit undersized for the age group, but his footwork and puck skills more than make up for it. Finished the season with four goals and 16 points.
Reeths-Puffer Defenseman Connor Anderson
Third in the state in scoring among defensemen from the Class of 2027. Connor Anderson stepped into the Reeths-Puffer lineup and made an immediate impact, as one of six Rockets with 20-or-more points this season. Ended ‘23-24 on an eight-game point streak.
Petoskey Defenseman Anderson Ward
The leading scorer in the state among freshmen defensemen. Anderson Ward scored 18 goals and 34 points, finishing second on Petoskey in scoring. He started his varsity career with a nine-game point streak, and followed that up with an eight-game streak later on in the season.
Grandville Defenseman Lewis Gardine
Led all Grandville defensemen in scoring with five goals and 15 points. Lewis Gardine was the only freshman on a Bulldogs team that had 18 underclassmen, and anchored the young squad’s defensive efforts in every phase of the game.

Quinn Pascoe
L | 2008 | Livonia United
Alpena Goalie Parker Schuldt
He won the first varsity start of his career, and went on to win six more games in his next 10 starts with a 1.96 goals-against average. Parker Schuldt has real good size for the birth year and all the tools to blossom into a top goalie prospect. He’s got some elements of his game to polish and clean up, but Schuldt has a very high ceiling.
Saginaw Heritage Goalie Landon Hayward
Earned a near 50-50 split in net this season as a freshman. Landon Hayward posted a 5-7-0 record in 15 games as a freshman. At 5-foot-11, he has decent size with fluid movements in net. Nearly half of his games came against Top-25 competition.
Livonia United Goalie Quinn Pascoe
Played in all but one game for the first-year co-op Livonia United. Quinn Pascoe posted a 3.67 goals-against average and .838 save percentage in the uber-competitive KLAA. He backstopped the Red Stallions to a pair of one-goal losses to Salem and Livonia Stevenson, as well as wins over Grosse Pointe South and Canton.
