East-vs-West-Seniors

There's just too many high-quality players in the junior and senior classes to try and limit myself to 23 names. So, for the All-Junior and All-Senior Team selections, I divided the state into East and West teams geographically by U.S. 127 and Interstate 75. This pits the top prospects from the East against the Top prospects from the West in a hypothetical All-Star Game for Michigan high school hockey supremacy.

My criteria for the All-Senior Teams:

  1. Overall skill, ability and potential
  2. Impact and role they played to their respective team
  3. Performance and production

Who do you think wins the All-Senior All-Star Game?

Byron Center Forward Jackson Froysland

One-half of Byron Center’s dynamic duo, Jackson Froysland helped lead the Bulldogs back to the D-II championship game with 78 points in 29 games this season. He’s a dynamic playmaker who’s dangerous with and without the puck, and the bigger the game, the better he performs.

Houghton Forward Michael Maillette

One of the fastest, top-speed skaters in the state this season. Michael Maillette is a threat to score every time he touches the puck, proved positive by his 33 goals and 48 points as a senior. Solid build, good skater, heavy shot and can be all over the place in a great way.

Houghton Forward Tanner Flachs

Defensively sound with solid execution of the game plan. Tanner Flachs stays on top of the play, has a good motor and works with a purpose. Finished the season with 10 goals and 15 points, but his game is more about the offense he eliminates than what Flachs creates.

Marquette Forward Nash Riipi

Nash Riipi is a pesky forward who can really fluster opponents at both ends of the rink. His feet never stop moving, he’s constantly engaged and seemingly always involved in the play. Missed more than a month of the season and still finished with 26 points in just 18 games.

East Grand Rapids Forward Glenn Green

Smooth hands, nifty moves and slippery with the puck. Glenn Green’s puck skills are on a higher level than most, and it helped him produce 11 goals and 36 points as a first-year senior. He’s all over the ice in a great way, earning himself a ton of puck touches and chances to make plays.

Bay Reps Forward Thomas Boynton-Fisher

Physically imposing a 6-foot-4. Thomas Boynton-Fisher has a heavy shot and a quick release, not needing much time or space to uncork one on goal. His 20 goals and 58 points were second on the team in scoring, with 15 of those points coming against Top-25 teams.

Traverse City West Forward Brandon Meyers

Little elements of his game pay big dividends. Brandon Meyers has a quick jump and good compete off of face-offs, which gives him an advantage in 50-50 pucks. That willingness to engage led Meyers to score 13 goals and 36 points; both marks were team highs for Traverse City West.

Bay Reps Forward Grant Lucas

Led the Bay Reps in scoring with 44 goals and 66 points this season. Grant Lucas opened up ‘23-24 on a 14-game point streak, thanks to his well-rounded skill set of skating ability, puck skills and hockey IQ.

Hancock Forward Bryce Hanner

More of a reader and reactor to the play as it unfolds, anticipating the flow of the game. Bryce Hanner has really good puck skills and awareness that helped him score a team-high 13 goals and 21 points this season.

Bay Reps Forward Ethan Coleman

Playing alongside two imposing offensive threats, Ethan Coleman worked the role of facilitator excellently. His 33 assists were among the most in the state this season, and Coleman’s ability to make smart plays at both ends led to plenty of opportunities for offense.

Byron Center Forward Cade Pratt

Led Byron Center in scoring with 88 points this season. Cade Pratt recorded a point in each of the 30 games the Bulldogs played this season, ending his Michigan high school hockey career with a 35-game point streak. A compact center who puts himself around the play constantly.

Rockford Forward Nathan Dixon

Rockford’s leading scorer with 30 goals and 43 points this season, factoring in on more than half of the team’s total offense. Nathan Dixon has a pretty quick first burst and an ability to change directions swiftly. Can be a matchup nightmare for most defenders in a 1-on-1 scenario.

Grand Rapids Christian Forward Josh VanSchepen

Can make the fancy moves and flashy dekes to get past defenders. Josh VanSchepen led Grand Rapids Christian in scoring with 19 goals and 42 points, finishing the season on a 13-game point streak.

Calumet Forward Cam Anderson

An ugly, scrappy, work-hard that you need somewhere in your lineup. Cam Anderson has a high motor and I love the way he stays engaged in the play constantly. Led Calumet in scoring with 31 points, with 13 of those coming in 12 games against Top-25 opponents.

Clarkston Forward Owen Croston

One of the more complete packages in terms of junior-level potential, given the combination of his size, skating ability, scoring touch and compete level. Owen Croston opened the season on a 14-game point streak, and finished with 20 goals and 35 points en route to a State Final finish.

Brighton Forward Cam Duffany

Arguably the most dominant player in Michigan high school hockey this season. Cam Duffany had a way of taking over the game and willing his team to victory on a regular basis. He put up 70 points as a senior, with 16 game-winning goals in his varsity career.

Detroit Catholic Central Forward Jackson Walsh

There aren’t many players at this level that truly make others around them better; Jackson Walsh is one of them. He finds way of elevating people’s games around him, adapting to make plays like pucks to space or drawing defenders to him and dishing to open guys. Walsh put up 46 points against the toughest schedule in the state.

Detroit Catholic Central Nolan Galda

Dangerous offensively, both off the rush and set up in-zone. Nolan Galda is a good skater with a solid build, and tough on both ends of the ice. Stood out as a finisher on a team that had six skaters with double-digit goal totals.

Country Day Forward Clay Spencer

Very few can attack the net offensively with the puck at top speed like Clay Spencer. He really pushes the pace, and is a challenge to defend with and without the puck. He recorded a point in all but four games this season for Country Day.

De La Salle Forward Colton Fuqua

He’s a phone booth player who can operate effectively in tight quarters. That makes Colton Fuqua a matchup nightmare along the walls and below the goal line for most defenders, as his shiftiness and evasiveness can be tough to keep up with.

Detroit Catholic Central Forward Sebastiano Iavasile

Sebastiano Iavasile’s work ethic on the forecheck is great. I love the way he competes along the walls and his willingness to engage. Oddly enough, those effort plays translated into offense the other way, to the tune of 14 goals and 21 points for Detroit Catholic Central.

U of D Jesuit Forward Carter Cate

Shows the ability to make some very high-level plays through deception, anticipation and overall understanding of the game. When Carter Cate gets hot, he’s very tough to stop offensively, creating opportunities for himself and others. Led U of D Jesuit in goals (18) and points (29).

Chelsea Forward Brandon Davila

His 21 goals and 45 points this season were impressive, but Brandon Davila’s defensive effort may separate him more than any offensive contributions. He backchecks with a purpose, defends ‘the house’ first and supports the play very well.

Brighton Forward Lane Petit

A work-hard on the forecheck with a penchant for finishing hits and throwing his weight around. Lane Petit will make his presence felt in a game one way or another, but usually coming in the form of offense. His 36 goals tied for the team lead in ‘23-24, and Petit posted the third consecutive 40-point season of his varsity career.

Bay City Forward Gunnar Weber

Right place, right time, all the time. The puck just seems to find Gunnar Weber all over the ice, and it affords him ample opportunities to then make plays with it as well. His 40 goals and 71 points were among the most in the state this season.

Sault Ste. Marie Forward Garrett Gorsuch

Garrett Gorsuch is busy on the ice. He’s initiating on the forecheck and engaging with the opponent constantly. Not just a physical presence, but stick on stick and taking away passing lanes. Reliable getting pucks out of the D-zone. And never out of the play on a backcheck. What’s not to like?

Saline Forward Mateo Iadipaolo

He’s a D-zone breakout buster on the forecheck and a penalty killing machine. Mateo Iadipaolo has one of the highest motors in the state when it comes to playing without the puck. It’s served him well, scoring 25 goals and 41 points this season.

Grosse Ile Forward Fisher Gurney

A deceptively long reach with explosive hands and finesse moves with the puck. Fisher Gurney led the state in scoring with 83 points this season, and has the physical frame to fill out into a prospect capable of playing junior hockey and beyond.

Houghton Defenseman Connor Raffaelli

Arguably the best defenseman in the state this season. Connor Raffaelli is a fantastic skater who keeps tight gaps, plays aggressive without exposing himself and is smart with the puck on his stick. Nine goals and 35 points as a senior for Houghton.

Grand Rapids Christian Defenseman Ethan Ogle

He anticipates the play exceptionally well and plays passing lanes in the neutral zone like a free safety in football. Ethan Ogle is a gifted skater with an ability to make home-run plays from the back end, scoring six goals and 27 points.

Marquette Defenseman Adam Heikkila

Not going to flash or ‘wow’ with big plays, but very dependable and gets the puck where it needs to go consistently. Adam Heikkila has really good gap control as well and does a lot of the little things you love to see from a responsible defender.

Lumen Christi Defenseman Daniel Brady

A stout defender with tremendous size and reach, listed at 6-foot-3 and 196 lbs. Daniel Brady can also produce offensively, leading the Lumen Christi D corps with 14 goals and 41 points from the back end this season.

Hancock Defenseman Luke Mikkola

Luke Mikkola is an effective skater from the back end. His puck skills and hockey IQ further elevate his impact on the game, as he scored six goals and 21 points for Hancock this season.

Portage Defenseman Jack Schnur

He scored points in all but three games this season for Portage. Jack Schnur is a highly effective D-man who's pretty balanced as well. Fifteen goals and 30 points as a first-year senior for the Muskies.

Lumen Christi Defenseman Luke Sexton

More of a shifty, puck mover capable of creating offense while running the point on a power-play unit. Luke Sexton may be smaller in stature, but his ability to make plays and go north are huge. As a distributor and playmaker from the blue line, Sexton scored 14 goals and 40 points this season.

Flint Powers Defenseman Nolan Berner

One of the best skaters amongst defensemen in the Class of 2024. Nolan Berner has fancy footwork and can get to top speed in a hurry, using that advantage to maintain tight gaps and stay engaged with the play. He scored 15 goals and 36 points while also maintaining a plus-27 rating.

Ann Arbor Skyline Defenseman Graham Newton

Graham Newton is a tough one to rattle, rarely under duress in the heat of the moment. His movements are fluid, his decisions are calculated. No surprise that he dominated for Ann Arbor Skyline this season with 20 goals and 54 points.

Brother Rice Defenseman Johnny Kunz

A 6-foot-3, 215-lb force on the back end that can really push guys around in the lower third of the zone. Johnny Kunz played in all three phases of the game for Brother Rice, not just killing penalties, but scoring 11 goals and 36 points offensively as well.

Cranbrook Defenseman Roman Cicco

He’s one of the best at eliminating offensive threats before they have a chance to get going. Roman Cicco clamps down on opposing wingers coming out of the D-zone, closes gaps quickly in the neutral zone and just erases offense with ease. In rhythm, comfortable, smart and calculated.

Clarkston Defenseman Evan Adams

A stout defender who’s tough to play against because of his gap control and footwork. Evan Adams put up three goals and 24 points this season by just snapping pucks around the rink; every pass wired with intensity and purpose.

U of D Jesuit Defenseman Henry Balasia

Great size at 6-foot-2, coupled with good quickness and footwork. Henry Balasia has some of those intangibles in his game that scouts salivate over. I also love how engaged in the play he is, getting up and down the ice with the flow of the game.

Saginaw Heritage Defenseman Owen Turner

There’s good urgency and effort in Owen Turner’s game. May not be the prettiest, but certainly effective and impactful on the overall play. Engages in board battles, wires passes around the rink and heads-up plays that led to 17 goals and 42 points this season.

Grand Rapids Catholic Central Goalie Trent Goheen

His movements are very quick, swift and crisp. Trent Goheen won 12 games for the second season in a row, finishing with a 1.94 goals-against average and .931 save percentage. His athleticism coupled with good size makes Goheen a nice junior-level prospect.

Houghton Goalie Bryant Lee

Bryant Lee is a compact goaltender who’s very smooth in his movements and has quick feet, able to adlib and adjust to the play as it unfolds in front of him. His 16 wins, 1.38 goals-against average and .935 save percentage all ranked among tops in the state this season.

Eastside Goalie Reed Drouare

Size and athleticism coupled with stellar numbers that don't lie. Reed Drouare is north of 6-feet tall and has a career goal-against average below 2.00 with a .935 save percentage. May be one of the more overlooked players in the state this season because of the schedule and W-L record.

Sault Ste. Marie Goalie Cam LaBadie

The best junior-level goalie prospect in Michigan high school hockey, period. Cam LaBadie has the size, athleticism, footwork and compete level necessary to move on. At 6-foot-1 with a 1.43 goals-against average and .941 save percentage, he’s the total package.

Brighton Goalie Levi Pennala

His compete level and effort in goal significantly makes up for his 5-foot-7 stature. Levi Pennala is an absolute gamer who’s never completely out of the play. Posted a 1.70 goals-against average and .936 save percentage this season, thanks to good footwork and sound positioning.

Riverview Gabriel Richard Goalie Ryan Rainey

Very long and rangy in net, managing to take up a significant amount of space in the net. Ryan Rainey is also one of the more active goalies in the state at playing the puck and engaging with the play. His 1.70 goals-against average and .939 save percentage were Top 10 in the state as well.
